Google Business Profile: The Fields Most Local Businesses Get Wrong

By the time a customer clicks through to your website, they've usually already formed an opinion โ€” from your Google Business Profile. Here's where that first impression most often breaks down.

The primary category is wrong or too broad

Your primary category is the single biggest signal Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. A mobile mechanic listed under the generic "Auto Repair" category instead of something more specific misses out on searches that would have matched exactly. This is worth revisiting even for a listing that's been live for years โ€” categories that were fine at setup can stop matching what the business actually does.

Service areas aren't defined โ€” or are defined too wide

A business that serves customers across a metro area but never sets a service area on its profile is leaving Google to guess. Guess wrong, and you either show up for searches too far away to actually serve, or you get filtered out of nearby searches entirely.

Hours are stale

Outdated hours are one of the fastest ways to lose a customer who was ready to call โ€” they see "Closed" when you're open, or show up when you're not, and don't come back to check again. Special hours for holidays are easy to forget and just as costly.

Photos are missing or outdated

Listings with real, current photos consistently perform better with searchers than listings with none โ€” or with photos from years ago that no longer reflect the business, the team, or the space. This is one of the lowest-effort fixes with an outsized effect on whether someone trusts the listing enough to click through.

Nobody's responding to reviews

An unanswered review โ€” good or bad โ€” reads as an abandoned listing. Responding, even briefly, signals an active business and gives you a chance to address a bad review publicly instead of letting it sit as the only word on the subject.

The fix is usually a cleanup, not a rebuild

Most of this isn't about creating something new โ€” it's about correcting what's already there. A full audit of category, service area, hours, and photos is often a single sitting's worth of work with an immediate effect on how the listing performs.
